There's an old saying : A picture is worth 1000 words

Well, in the modern data driven world we can safely say : A visual is worth 1000 data points

This makes us think :

  1. What makes a visual appealing to its audience?

  2. What makes a visual confuse its audience?

  3. Can a visual be designed to be good always?

These are some of the questions whose answers we'll explore in this blog.

This is going to be a video guided discussion. Refer the video provided in the end. It has an super interesting activity to work along. So, stay along with me.

Let's start with a question :

Q) Show me the trend of pencil sales year on year

How can we answer this?

One way is to create a simple column chart as shown below :

However, what about this?

pencil-chart.pngConclusion : The kind of shape used can significantly improve the meaningfulness of a visual. Hence, the 1st ingredient which makes or breaks a visual is : Shape

Next Question :

Q) Show me the sales and profit numbers for this month.

You presented the below visual :

  • Sales looks fine. Shown in black which is a general color used to report anything

  • Profits are reported in RED which is a symbol of something going wrong!

  • Losses are reported in GREEN which can deceive the audience in mistakenly think all good within this box

  • Finally, seems we don't want the audience to pay attention to Costs. Hence, the greying out!

Conclusion : Colors play a significant role in attracting or denying attention from the audience. Hence, the 2nd ingredient which makes or breaks a visual is : Color
